Yamaha GT-2000L Direct Drive Turntable

The Yamaha GT-2000L is a legendary, quartz-controlled, direct-drive turntable of the absolute highest caliber. It was produced by Yamaha between 1982 and 1992, exclusively for the Japanese market. The "GT" in its name stands for "Gigantic & Tremendous." This design philosophy is reflected in the extensive use of materials and the unit's massive weight of approximately 28 kg.
The primary differences in the more refined "L" (luxury) version, compared to the standard GT-2000 model, lie in its cabinet and convenience features: it boasts a premium, genuine walnut wood veneer and comes equipped as standard with a non-contact, optical auto-lifter that automatically raises the tonearm at the end of a record.

Key Features & Specifications

• Mass-based Concept (Inertia): For the GT-2000L, Yamaha relied heavily on physical mass to minimize resonance. With a diameter of 37.4 cm, the platter extends well beyond the edge of a standard LP. Combined with its 5.8 kg weight, it generates an exceptionally high moment of inertia (1.2 t/cm²), ensuring rock-solid rotational stability.
• Massive Tonearm: The tonearm has an effective length of 262 mm and an effective mass of approximately 22 g, classifying it as a medium-to-heavy tonearm. It pairs perfectly with moving-coil (MC) cartridges that have low-to-medium compliance. The tonearm height (VTA) can be adjusted mechanically.
• Optoelectronic Auto-Lifter: A non-contact light sensor detects the end of a record and triggers the lifting of the tonearm. This protects the stylus when a record continues to play unattended. The mechanism can be precisely calibrated for the run-out groove area.
