Restored THORENS TD160 Super
Frame made of 100-year-old oak wood
Wood with history...

The old oak wood is probably from round wood that was found in Waldkircher district and was stored in the “Sailerlenzen” yard. This farm was probably built around 1780 - 1800. This farm burned down in 1902 and the wood was saved from the flames at that time. In their first life, the “logs” were the outside walls of old houses; they were mostly hewn by hand and are around 105-120 years old.

Limit switch: No
Inner plate: metal
Bearing mandrel: 7mm
Basic dimensions: width: 45cm, depth: 36cm, height approx. 18cm

The housing consists of 25mm thick side panels made of solid oak wood (oiled) and a 16mm thick base made of MDF. The connection panel for all required cable connections is located on the back.

Cover plate made of 1mm aluminum, anodized shiny gold, with white lettering

pickup. With the VM series, Ortofon has long created the reference MM cartridge, the long production time and the characteristic needle body are well known all over the world. The VM Alpha is the entry into the series and is a great entry-level system for mid-range turntables. The VM series from Ortofon is compatible with each other. So you can start with a VM Alpha and then improve the quality with the appropriate needle slot by using the next higher needle slot.

Audio cable. Branded cable. Ready-made analog audio cinch cable for cabling turntables! Thanks to the particularly high-quality inner conductor made of oxygen-free copper (OFC), this quality cable ensures true-to-life signal transmission. Contact security and corrosion protection are guaranteed by the 24 carat gold-plated plug contacts. The cable has a neutral sound with good dynamics and spaciousness.

Plate. The turntable is polished to a high shine in five complex and time-consuming steps. The high gloss polish gives your record player a unique look. With surface sealing using a special protective coating to prevent repeated tarnishing and for a long-lasting shine.

Plate support with anti-static effect! This consists of a balanced mixture of rubber and antistatic cork granules. The result is a perfect connection between the vinyl record and the turntable. Suitable for the Thorens turntables, this rubber cork mat absorbs unwanted resonances and vibrations. This significantly improves the sound of your music system. Made from natural resources in compliance with environmental standards.

Spikes made of chrome-plated stainless steel. To ensure that the record player is decoupled from low-frequency vibrations, the chassis is equipped with height-adjustable spikes. Resonances and feedback are thus effectively prevented.

The drive belt is manufactured according to the original Thorens specifications (same material and dimensions).

We recommend the following systems for the SME Series III tonearm:

Ortofon (MM): VinylMaster Series, 2M Series
audio-technica (MC): OC9XML, OC9XSH, OC9XSL

Short description of pickup systems:

ORTOFON VinylMaster series (MM systems, harmonize very well with the SME Series III):

VinylMaster Alpha: MM pickup, elliptical needle grind, pickup with temperament and neutral basic character

VinylMaster Red: MM pickup, "nude" elliptical needle grind, pickup for sophisticated sound requirements

VinylMaster Silver: MM pickup, "nude" diamond with Fritz Gyger 70 needle cut, excellent sound properties, very dynamic playing style

ORTOFON 2M series (MM systems):

2M Red: MM pickup, elliptically ground diamond, perfect for beginners, upgrade to 2M Blue possible

2M Blue: MM pickup, "nude" diamond with elliptical needle cut, pickup for sophisticated sound requirements

2M Bronze: MM pickup, "nude" diamond with fine-line needle cut, system for very high sound demands, upgrade to 2M Black and 2M Black LVB 250 possible

2M Black: MM pickup, "nude" diamond with Shibata needle cut, excellent sound properties, very dynamic playing style

2M Black LVB 250: MM pickup, extremely stiff boron cantilever, "nude" diamond with Shibata needle cut, even hotter, more urgent and more energetic

AUDIO-TECHNICA dual moving magnet stereo pickup from the 700 series (MM systems):

VM740ML: MM system, high-end model with microlinear needle and die-cast aluminum alloy body. This pickup is characterized by outstanding treble reproduction and good localization in the sound.

VM750SH: MM system, with ultra-light, high-precision needle tip, which is characterized by low distortion and better imaging of the frequency spectrum. This needle truly captures all the details of the information contained in the record grooves. Pickup with Shibata stylus originally developed for playback of 4-channel vinyl records that require particularly good treble reproduction. This model not only transmits the high frequencies, but also the mids and lows optimally.

VM760SLC: MM system, with special line contact needle, with ultra-light, high-precision needle tip, which is characterized by low distortion and better imaging of the frequency spectrum. This needle truly captures all the details of the information contained in the record grooves.

AUDIO-TECHNICA moving coil pickups from the AT33 series (MC systems):

AT33EV: Moving coil pickup. Elliptical stylus chip and durable duralumin conical tube boom

AT33PTG/II: Ultra-light needle carrier made of gold-plated hardened boron, microlinear needle grind, outstanding magnetic properties, unadulterated transmission, optimal damping of unwanted vibrations

AT33SA: high-performance line-contact pickup, Shibata needle cut, boron cantilever with double damping, wider sound reproduction with strong mids and bass

AUDIO-TECHNICA moving coil pickups from the OC9X series (MC systems):

AT-OC9XEB: Excellent and cost-effective entry into the world of moving coil pickups, stereo pickup with a mounted elliptical needle, particularly clean stereo image

AT-OC9XEN: Square shaft pickup for precise needle alignment and naked diamond needle for greater detail

AT-OC9XML: Complex microlinear diamond cut for an extended treble spectrum with a unique wealth of detail and less tendency to distort in the area of the inner grooves. The microlinear profile optimally protects records and needles from wear

AT-OC9XSH: Shibata cut diamond needles were originally developed for quadraphonic use and offer a tonal depth and treble range that is unparalleled.

AT-OC9XSL: Special Line Contact needle like our flagship ART1000 - the ultimate diamond cut for high-precision signal reproduction, giving all instruments a dimension and realism that hardly any other configuration can offer.
